Back on the plains in 2019 to share in nature's spectacle

Day 1 – Nearly, oh so nearly

And I’m back. This time with 3 in tow, its time to chase the elusive twister again and so far it has been a tale of near misses.

We had to start late today as Shiv didn’t touch down from Vegas until 4pm. Unfortunately this was to be the only touchdown of the day for us, as nature teased us, dropping tornadoes and baseball sized hail tantalisingly out of reach. As we closed in on the first storm, it tempted us with some awesome structure only to dissipate just as we arrived. Still, it gave us the chance to capture some truly impressive Mammatus clouds as well as a fantastic rotating updraft structure.

We watched the storm fall apart only to see the next storm in the line begin to strengthen. Time was against us however. It was too far away and light was fading, so we headed back to Dallas, leaving the storm to the truly hardcore night-time chasers. We were treated to some fantastic lightning that evening as the storm went on to cause some heavy straight-line wind damage further south and east as it made its way to Louisiana.
